But when his family needs him, Mick feels obligated to help. This time, it's his presumed-dead brother, Little Frankie Abruzzo, who needs help getting out from under a pushy bookie. But the simple job of getting Frankie out of debt soon escalates into bad business that threatens the life Mick wants with his lover, Nora Blackbird.
Mick Abruzzo The Second Wire The Blackbird Sisters Mystery Series edition by Nancy Martin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Nancy Martin's Mick Abruzzo: The Second Wire is great! I thoroughly enjoyed it. This short story / novella (72 pages) is #9½ in the Blackbird Sisters Mystery series. All of the works in this series are highly recommended — four or five kitties! — and are a pleasing mixture of cozy mystery and chick lit. I always look forward to the next book in the series, so I can find out what happens next to Nora, Libby, Emma and Mick — and if a mystery or two get solved along the way, that's just icing on the cake! The Second Wire is told, as you might have guessed, from Mick's point of view, rather than in first person from Nora's POV, as are the primary books of the series. I was hooked from the first sentence:
● Against his better judgment, Mick Abruzzo agreed to meet his idiot brother at a noisy South Philadelphia college hangout where Little Frankie swore they'd blend in.
Idiot brother? That sounds intriguing, but details — I wanted details!
It is a nice change of pace to get Mick's thoughts and viewpoint on things, since his background is so different from Nora's. Some of this background is revealed in The Second Wire, so if you've ever wondered about what makes Mick tick (ooh, bad pun, sorry about that), here's your chance to find out.
If you're like me and you want to read books of a series in order, be sure to read Mick Abruzzo: The Second Wire first (after reading Little Black Book of Murder, #9) and then read A Little Night Murder (#10 — release date August 5, 2014).

Mick Abruzzo The Second Wire The Blackbird Sisters Mystery Series edition by Nancy Martin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Great read! I love Mick Abruzzo and sometimes he gets bury within the Blackbird Sisters story line, really like reading about him and his struggle with not following or falling into the family business.
In the case of Mick's first novella, you were shown his side of their beginning story. This just seems like it should have been included in either Book 10 or 11.
one of my favorite authors.....putting her hardbound books on kindle
Loved reading Mick’s point of view. I especially love that we get an insight into his mindset and his feelings.
Not only is this a great short story, it shows us the night when Nora gave Mick the big news! Poor Mick is still in between an rock and a hard place deciding about staying straight or using his family resources to make life easier. This little vignette keeps him right in the middle! A nice teaser for the next book!
This is another home run for Nancy Martin. Book number 10 in the Blackbird Sister's series is almost due to be published, and I have yet to find one of the books that did not meet my expectations. This is the second novella, and it just gives even more depth to characters that I already love. The only bad part of this series it waiting for a new novel. A mystery author I recommend constantly to friends.
This does not match up with all the events in the Blackbird series. It portrays Nick in a way that makes him unlikable because he IS A THUG in this book. He is sneaky, selfish, and lacking scruples. He is in house arrest in the series, but in this book, he is driving around looking for trouble. In the Blackbird series his character may be shady but still likeable and you want to root for him. In this book, I want him to grow up and be held accountable. I can't believe the same author wrote this novella.
